Jacob has been working super hard to raise the funds for his Borneo expedition in September. He’s even managed to pay it all off earlier than expected! Well done Jacob!
The thought of an expedition to Borneo later this year intrigued me, but I was hesitant as I have never travelled overseas before or been so long or far away from my family or friends before, but after discussing the possibility with my parents, we decided it was a once in a life time opportunity that I just had to do it. So then the start of my journey began.
To kick start my fundraising, I went to my local Golf Club – Cairns Golf Club – of which I am a member and organised several weekends where I could hold a sausage sizzle and a raffle. This was a huge success! I also contacted local business via telephone, email and even door to door asking for any donations that would help to raise funds. To my surprise the local community support was amazing and these very generous businesses donated products for the raffle (major prize was a signed Cowboys Jersey) and cash towards the cost of the expedition to Borneo.
I also took part in several of the group fundraisers with my fellow team mates heading to Borneo. These events were car washes, Bunnings & BCF sausage sizzles, Xmas monster raffle, just to name a few. I have learnt a lot about fundraising and surprisingly, myself. I’m a shy kid normally and this journey so far has shown me how much I am capable of accomplishing just by having the courage to speak up and ask and also putting plans into actions. I could not have done any of this without the support of my parents. I am fortunate that I have raised the amount required for the expedition, now I just have to complete my kit and I`m set to go.
I will continue to group fundraise with the other students as I enjoy getting to know them better. I may also do another sausage sizzle at the Golf Club to help complete my kit. I also really enjoyed the practice trek some of us did and would love to do more of those. I’m really getting excited…bring it on!
